Any medical procedure has its share of risks, IVF is no exception.

Medications given alongside IVF can have side-effects like bloating, nausea, cramps, constipation, acute stomach pain, etc.

These IVF medications can also result in a more extreme reaction like Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS). Excessive doses of hormone medication in your body can lead to ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)

Symptoms of Ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) are shortness of breath, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, bloating, cramping, bleeding acute abdominal pain, and weight gain.

The IVF process has some additional risks, which can be more serious.

The egg retrieval process can lead to bleeding, cramping, or infections. Sometimes internal organs are likely to be damaged in the process.

Another health risk is that IVF has a high chance of multiple pregnancies. You are likely to birth two or more babies in a single pregnancy

In Multiple pregnancies, there is a risk of miscarriages, low birth weight, or premature birth.

However, the possibility of a miscarriage through IVF is as same as natural pregnancy. Health risks and side effects vary with individuals, hence your doctor will customize your IVF cycle depending on various parameters like age, health, lifestyle, underlying issues, and pre-existing conditions.
